Late Baba Hardev Singh, popularly known as Nirankari Baba, was an Indian chief leader of the Sant Nirankari Mission from 1980 until his death, and a spiritual guru who led many individuals to a divine path of spiritual growth.
Early life and education
Baba Hardev Singh ji was born on 23rd of February 1954 to Baba Gurbachan Singh and Kulwant Kaur in Delhi. He pursued his elementary school education from Yadvindra public school, Patiala, Punjab, and later on went to Rosary public school, Sant Nirankari Colony, Delhi. Baba Hardev Singh ji completed his graduation from the Delhi University. In 1975, he married Savinder Kaur during an annual Nirankari Sant Samagam in Delhi.

The spiritual journey is an integral part of Nirankari Baba Hardev Singh’s biography. In 1971, he became a member of the Nirankari Seva Dal. After the assassination of his father Gurbachan Singh, who headed the Sant Nirankari Mission in 1980, he succeeded as the chief leader (satguru) of the organization. The Sant Nirankari Mission was established in the year 1929 by baba Buta Singh, who formerly belonged to the Nirankari sect. He was succeeded by Baba Avtar Singh. The mission grew rapidly after it shifted its base from West Punjab to Delhi. In 2016, the organization had grown to 2000 centers and millions of followers worldwide.

Hardev Singh’s tragic death took place on the 13th of May, near Montreal, Quebec, Canada in a car accident. Many renowned leaders like the then Indian President Late Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi expressed their grief over his sudden demise. , He was cremated on the 18th of May, 2016 at the Nigambodh Ghat crematorium.

The mission had been involved in violent clashes with the novel Sikhs in the 1970s. In 1978, the very best Sikh religious body ‘The Akal Takht’, released a decree directing the Khalsa Panth (a fraternity of Sikhs) to chop off all worldly relations with those Sikhs who were a part of the Nirankari organization, as they were considered to be an ‘enemy of Sikhism’.
