In its bid to satisfy its environmentally conscious vegan consumers, oral hygiene company Colgate has recently launched the first ever vegan toothpaste – ‘Smile for Good’ that comes in a recyclable tube. The new toothpaste is certified by the Vegan Society. Toothpaste tubes have been usually impossible to recycle since they are made of a mixture of plastic and aluminium. But the new toothpaste by Colgate tackles this by using high density polyethylene (HDPE), one of the easiest plastic polymers to recycle.
Colgate-Palmolive said that their experts had found out a way to turn the plastic, which is usually hard into “comfortably squeezable” tube. The company said that the new technology will be shared with its competitors as well to curb the usage of non-recyclable plastics. “Colgate wants to make tubes a part of the circular economy by keeping this plastic productive and eliminating waste,” said Noel Wallace, Colgate-Palmolive’s chief executive.
Not only this, the company has gone an extra mile and listed the ingredients of toothpaste on the tube alongside a simple explanation of their function. Colgate is looking to work more on sustainability and have 100 percent recyclable packaging of all kinds of its products by 2025. However, the 75 ml product, now available at Waitrose and Boots outlets in UK, comes at £5, making it six times costlier than the brand’s regular toothpaste.
The new toothpaste is currently available in two variations – Smile for Good Protection and Smile for Good Whitening, with baking soda known for its whitening properties.
