A semen-filled balloon thrown at a student of LSRCollegeof Delhi University

Students of Lady Shri Ram College are not new to the harassment they face on Holi. However, the incident that took place recently was something completely different from all the past complaints.

While they were recently being attacked with water balloons by men in the locality, this time semen-filled balloons are being thrown at them.LSRCollegeof Delhi University

This happened to one student on Sunday, where she was attacked by a balloon that was filled with semen at Amar Colony market. The matter became known when she wrote it in a post on Instagram.

The girl was in a rickshaw, when a liquid-filled balloon hit her in the hip by an undefined man. She was shocked as the content of the balloon soaked into her dress. She wrote that her kurti and leggings were soiled.

Later a friend of her informed that this is becoming increasingly common in that area. Therefore, she decided to take it up to other students.

On Tuesday, woman development cell of the college met over this. Moreover, Delhi Police also assured to conduct self-defense workshops from March 8 for the students.

However, Chinmoy Biswal DCP (southeast) informed that the police haven’t received a formal complaint. Yet, they were inquiring and scanning CCTV footage of the area.

The girl is from northeast India.

In her Instagram post, she wrote, “I went out with a friend for lunch to a cafe in Amar Colony Market. At around five when heading back in a rickshaw there came flying my way a liquid-filled balloon hitting me in the hip where it burst open, its content seeping into my dress.”

“It dried white on my black leggings… I did not guess what it really was. Only when I returned to my hostel to hear another friend of mine talking about semen-flinging,” she continued.

Recalling the ordeal she has underwent, she said, “Ever since in moved to this city seven months ago, I’ve been bumped by more than once by men.”

“All accidentally of course. Hands have patted on me inappropriately,” Saying this she added that she has also been called derogatory names.

The cell in a statement said, “While such incidents happen throughout the year, they peak around Holi. The students expressed their anger, frustration and disgust at such incidents. It was felt that having safe spaces around the college is a right we need to fight for strongly. We must reclaim our public spaces.”

On Monday, Delhi University had announced to elaborate internal and external security arrangements on campus, hostels and other colleges for the security of students from any possible threat under the garb of Holi celebrations.
