IKEA planning to blend Swedish and Indian delights with its first venture in India

IKEA, the Swedish home-furnishing company became the part of Indian corporate news as it is set to launch its first store in Hyderabad.

The world’s largest furnishing retailer is all set to launch its first store in Hyderabad, India, next year. With the aim of retaining the flavors of Sweden, they adapted products and business strategies that also suit the Indian markets.

“This is to give the taste of what IKEA is all about, and also the taste of Sweden, where we come from. We’d like to showcase different products and home-furnishing solutions at very affordable prices,” said Ulf Smedberg, Indian marketing manager of IKEA.

The company has also launched an experience zone called the Hej Home at a mall in the city, to provide the glimpse of their furniture and kitchen appliances. A range of products is displayed in the experience zone. One of them being utensils cabinet in the model kitchen, utilizing an empty space within a cabinet and another was the display of IKEA’s unique design pendant lamp designed by Swedish designer David Wahl. However, the experience zone showcased only a fraction of the company’s 7000-8000 products that will be on sale in their store.

Apart from the home-furnishing, IKEA is also known for its appetizing food that it serves in the cafeterias within their stores. They are also planning to open one such cafeteria in its Hyderabad outlet which is expected to have the seating arrangements for as many as 1,000 people. According to Henrik Osterstrom, the Indian food manager of IKEA, the outlet will be focusing on offering the mélange of Swedish cuisine alongside the Indian taste. The menu may include dishes like, Salmon fillet, chicken, vegetarian version of meatballs and Swedish cookies.

With the basic aim of showcasing furnishing appliances that fit well into the Indian kitchens, IKEA’s main motive is to have a continuous presence on mobile phones and internet platforms with an e-commerce portal.
