Virtual architecture and designing | Changing the present for a better future

The advanced technology of virtual reality temporarily transports a person to a well-constructed real-like environment that can transmit sensations and feelings. Therefore, if people are able to experience the essence of those emotions prior to physically standing in the building, then there is a great opportunity to infuse such technology before the construction of a building for a much accurate representation of its size and space.

Convincing people about the finished look of a project with 2D or 3D representation has always been one of the biggest challenges in the design-led industries. Using virtual reality in architecture will give a 360 degree view of the project and the person will be able to walk through the proposed building and receive a better understanding of it.

Head mounted displays (HMDs) such as Oculus Rift, Google Cardboard, or HTC Vive, have the capacity to change the traditional methods of animations or scale models used by architects and designers. Now, they can easily communicate their ideas to clients, by providing them with the latest technology driven and immersive environment, presenting a much accurate representation of scale, depth and a sensation of space.

Latest smartphone devices are compatible with various virtual reality applications, which makes it easier to install them on the client’s phone and help them have an experience of real life simulations. These VR headsets are cost-efficient and have good quality graphics. The built-in accelerometers easily detects the movements of client as they navigate the virtual world.

Integration of virtual reality with architecture is a great way for architects to pitch prospective clients by allowing them to experience the project personally instead of viewing a floor plan or a 3D model. The client can make real time changes to aesthetics like colors, lights, furniture, etc. in the virtual world.

Witnessing the success of such a blend, more improvements in the fields of speed, graphics and real time alterations are being taken to influence an architect’s ability to use VR effectively. According to experts, “VR is bringing designers and end-users together in a way we’ve never been able to before”.
