The Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau made an announcement for legalizing cannabis earlier this year. The announcement turned into a reality.
Although medical marijuana is already legal in the country, the drug has been legalized under the Cannabis Act, with effect from today, October 17.
The sale of marijuana has already begun in the country with shops opening in Newfoundland just as the clock hit the 12 am mark.
Legalizing marijuana, according to Trudeau will “keep the money out of the pockets of organized crime.”
“Obviously the current approach – the current prohibition of marijuana – has not worked to protect our kids, to keep the money out of the pockets of organized crime and that’s why we’re bringing in a new legalized framework around marijuana,” The Guardian quoted.
After Uruguay, the move has made Canada the second and the largest country in the world to legalize cannabis.
AS per New York Times, in many provinces, the drug will only be available in government stores, while some of them will have privately owned shops selling it. Legal marijuana will be low on THC (tetra hydro cannabinol).
However, the law does not allow cannabis-infused edibles.
