The Prospects of Renewable Energy in India

With a population of 170 crore people, India has a massive demand for energy to fuel its rapidly growing economy. From an energy-deficient nation at independence, seven decades of efforts at making India energy-independent have bore fruit, and we are a power surplus nation today with a total installed power capacity of four lakh megawatts.

With sustainable development goals in mind, India is rapidly shifting towards environment-friendly and green technology to cater to its needs.

Today, India is the world’s third largest producer of renewable energy, with 40% of its installed electricity capacity coming from non-fossil fuel sources.

India’s total installed solar power capacity stands at 73.31 gigawatts, which is poised to grow more.

The government of India has been aggressively pushing the industry to manufacture Photovoltaic (PV) cells domestically and make solar power more accessible through its investments.

Schemes such as the National Solar Mission, Rooftop Solar Scheme, and PM-KUSUM scheme support farmers in installing solar pumps for irrigation, as well as the visionary initiative by India that created the International Solar Alliance.

Heeding the call, many players have started manufacturing solar panels in India and are working towards making Bharat self-reliant in PV cell manufacturing.

Big players like Adani Green and Tata Solar Power Systems dominate PV cell manufacturing in India. However, many new players have emerged in the field that are manufacturing quality solar panels in India.

Here’s a list of top manufacturers making India green and helping its populace tap into the unlimited source of energy that is sustainable and affordable.

  • Adani Green
Adani Solar was created in 2016 and has a 4 Gigawatt manufacturing capacity. The company offers mono-facial & bifacial modules (in PERC Technology) in solar panels. Currently, Adani Solar is working to create an ecosystem for 10 Gigawatt Solar Cell manufacturing in India.
  • Tata Solar Power Systems
Serving in the Industry for over 3 decades, Tata Solar provides solar panels to generate clean energy for residential, commercial & industrial institutions. Tata Power Solar manufacturing lines have a production capacity of 635 megawatts for modules and 500 megawatts for cell manufacturing lines.

  • Saatvik Green Energy Private Limited
Saatvik Green Energy was started in 2015 in Haryana. It boasts an annual production capacity of 1 gigawatt. It has a manufacturing plant in Ambala (Haryana) and is soon going to set up another one with a capacity of 1.2 gigawatts in Gandhidham, Gujarat.
  • Loom Solar
It is a 5-year-old startup based in Faridabad, Haryana, that manufactures solar panels and lithium-ion batteries. Loom Solar entered India’s solar panel manufacturing industry in 2018 and has since risen to new heights. Today, it has an annual manufacturing capacity of 100 megawatts.
  • Vikram Solar
Vikram Solar was established in 2006. It boasts a presence in the solar energy sector of more than 32 countries and has experience in the installation of 1.42-gigawatt projects in India. It has an annual manufacturing capacity of 3.5 gigawatt solar modules. So far, Vikram Solar has commissioned more than 300 projects at multiple locations.
  • Emmvee Photovoltaic Power Private Limited

Emvee was founded in 2007 to develop and manufacture high-performance Photovoltaic (PV) modules. Emmvee Photovoltaic is headquartered in Bengaluru and has active sales offices across India and Germany. It has successfully carried out multiple projects across India and Europe.

  • RenewSys
Started in 2011, Renewsys India has a total installed manufacturing capacity of 2.75 gigawatts. It offers a wide range of solar products, including solar panels, PV cells, PV encapsulants – EVA & POE, and PV back sheets. RenewSys supplies solar products to over 40 countries. This solar panel manufacturer has three manufacturing plants in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Patalganga.

Renewable energy has a lot of potential, with solar energy having a lot of potential, especially in the tropics, which receives a lot of sunshine and can be used to tap into a never-ending source of power.

With the government’s push for solar power, the population’s increased energy needs, and pollution caused by fossil fuels, Solar energy can be a game changer in the ever-growing energy sector.
