Paperless Travel Initiated At Bengaluru Airport

The Bengaluru Airport has recently tied up with Vistara airline for its new project keeping in line the government’s Digi Yatra initiative. Besides speeding up the check-in process, the new tech move will simplify travelling for passengers.

Biometric technology developed by Vision Box has been recently installed that will identify passengers by their face as they move across the airport, thereby avoiding stops and repeated presentation of boarding passes, passports and other physical identity documents. This move in turn will reduce the time taken to finally reach the airplane.

Hari Marar, MD and CEO of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) posits, “BIAL is extremely excited to roll out this Digi Yatra-based biometric technology that has the potential to make passenger experience at the BLR Airport seamless, secure and enjoyable.” As the gateway to a new India, the BLR Airport can be seen as a front runner amongst next-generation airport operations.

This project is a privacy protected information network and BIAL vouches to ensure the highest international standards of data security and respect passenger privacy. The first to experience paperless travel through this biometric technology on Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) were the passengers travelling from Bengaluru to Mumbai on July 22, 2019, Monday by October 2019.

The facial biometric program is being implemented under the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s Digi Yatra platform. After the completion of the final phase by early next year, it is expected to be the largest deployment of a completely paperless biometric programme in Asia with over 350 passenger touchpoints at BLR Airport Terminal 1.

Ravinder Pal Singh, Vistara’s chief information and innovation officer said that they will continue to keep a sharp focus on leveraging technology to make travelling increasingly seamless across customer touchpoints. He added that collaborating with organizations across the aviation ecosystem using biometric boarding technology is yet another step in this direction. He claims that Vistara will always be focused on using new technologies that give them an upper hand among their competitors.

As notified by Ravinder, Vistara is compliant with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which adopts privacy by design principles.

By October 2019, all Vistara flights are expected to be integrated into the biometric boarding process at BLR Airport.
